Alzheimer still incincible…..

Brain Scan done with PET.

The “chemical cosh” antipsychotic drugs that are widely prescribed for people with Alzheimer’s disease do more harm than good (according to the study). It’s found that around 60 percent of nursing home Alzheimer’s patients are given antipsychotics such as risperidone to calm and some way to contain their behavior. But the drugs are also known as neuroleptics , have several side-effects, which includes strokes and even death.

The study, funded by the Alzheimer’s research Trust, found that long term use of the drugs led to the significant deterioration in the thinking and verbal skills of the patients. For most patients, the drugs had no long term benefits at all.
It is also observed that over a six month period of treatment, there are no benefits from the neuroleptics in treating the behavior of the people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease when the symptoms are mild. For people with more severe behavioral symptoms, balancing the potential benefits against adverse effects is more difficult, but this study provides an important evidence base to inform this decision making process. On the overall study process the Trust scientist found out that the need for the more and better drugs for a distressing disease. It highlighted the urgent need to develop better treatments for this disease.
